PROJECT OVERVIEW

Vlooming is a 3D motion project that visualises the act of mindful breathing through blooming flowers.

Inspired by aquarium therapy and the 4-7-8 breathing technique, the project creates a hypnotic, slow-moving animation designed to induce emotional calm, especially for sensory-sensitive individuals in overstimulating urban environments.

From personal devices to holographic installations and gallery screenings, Vlooming proposes a flexible format for meditative interaction by bringing moments of emotional detachment and restoration into everyday life.

THE BRIEF

How might we create a sensory utopia that fosters calm through immersion for overstimulated young urban dwellers?

The challenge was to design a portable and immersive experience that helps people access a state of detachment and emotional restoration.

The goal was to create a space where people could simply breathe, detach, and feel calm.

FRAMING THE PROBLEM

The project began with a simple question: What does utopia mean in our lives today?

I saw utopia as a calming state—one where the mind can rest, free from stimulation, pressure, and demand.

In primary research, many people described their ideal space as quiet, light, and detached from the demands of daily life. Rather than striving toward something ideal, they longed for somewhere to simply pause.

For those living in overstimulated urban environments, especially individuals with sensory sensitivity, this sense of calm can feel distant. I wanted to explore how design could offer a space where that distance gently softens.

RESPONSE

The idea began with a simple act: spacing out while watching water. I was drawn to the calming effect of aquarium environments, where soft, slow movements and gentle light naturally reduce tension. Inspired by this, I designed two digital plants—Blue Petal and Coral Tree—to visualise a breathing rhythm.

Their blooming, pausing, and fading follow the 4-7-8 breathing cycle. This movement loops without instruction or goal, encouraging a state of passive focus similar to staring into a tank. The forms were based on marine plants, chosen for their fluidity and ability to suggest depth without overwhelming the senses.

Multi-Context Adaptation

Vlooming was developed as a looping 3D motion for various contexts: a mobile app, a hologram box, and a screening event at Shoreditch Arts Club. Each version invites people to pause, even briefly, and experience a quiet mental shift in overstimulated environments.
