PROJECT OVERVIEW
Incompatible Relationship explores the potential for transformation between two naturally incompatible substances: water and oil. Through the introduction of a third element, aspirin, the project stages a chemical reaction that temporarily bridges their separation. This process is captured across six distinct phases and composed into a single photographic image.
The work investigates the delicate balance between opposition and interaction, reflecting on how an external catalyst can provoke moments of cohesion between contrasting elements. It visualises the momentary possibility of connection within disconnection.

THE BRIEF
How can we visualise the potential for connection between incompatible elements?
The goal was to capture the shift from separation to connection through physical interaction, highlighting the moments of harmony between opposing elements.
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
The project was first inspired by the orbital dynamics between the Earth, Moon, and Sun, a system built on gravitational push and pull. This became a starting point to explore the invisible forces that allow fundamentally different entities to coexist.
Influenced by sculptor Lorenzo Quinn’s expressions of tension and touch, I began sketching visual metaphors of distance, resistance, and convergence. This conceptual process led to the selection of water and oil as naturally incompatible materials, with aspirin serving as an unpredictable mediator.

RESPONSE
The experiment was conducted by layering oil and coloured water in a transparent container and introducing aspirin tablets to provoke a reaction. The aspirin created effervescence that briefly agitated the boundary, allowing the two substances to interact before returning to separation.
This transition was captured in six photographic frames, each representing a stage in the cycle of tension and release. The final outcome is a high-resolution photographic print composed of these six sequential images, presented as one cohesive composition.

outcome
The result is a visual narrative of how an incompatible relationship transforms into a moment of connection. The work brings together visual experimentation and symbolic storytelling, expressing how unity can briefly emerge between elements that seem inherently disconnected.
