PROJECT OVERVIEW

Reds: Beauty in Korean is a sound-interactive poster created to preserve the emotional nuance of the Korean language, inspired by the question: “What would I want to share with an audience 100 years from now?”

Language constantly evolves, and meanings can shift even within the same language. This project focuses on one of Korean’s distinctive features: its diverse vocabulary for describing colours. Centered on seven variations of the word “red,” the poster allows audiences to experience both visual and auditory qualities, encountering the beauty of language and its cultural heritage.

Furthermore, it can be expanded into a cultural campaign experience that communicates the importance of language preservation.

THE BRIEF

How might we communicate the beauty and identity of language to people in the future, before its forms disappear or transform?

The goal was to translate language into a tangible format that combines sound and visual form, exploring how it can be preserved through multisensory interaction.

RESPONSE

The interactive poster visualises seven words for “red” as typographic forms, each reflecting its nuance and context.

When touched, each activates its pronunciation, allowing the audience to experience both its visual and sonic qualities.

By combining sound and form, the poster goes beyond literal definition and creates a multisensory impression of meaning.

APPLICATIONS

The project, originally conceived as a cultural preservation initiative, can also expand into a K-Beauty brand experience for international audiences.

At a K-culture event, a beauty brand’s pop-up or interactive kiosk could let visitors press a button to hear different Korean words for “red,” with a lipstick shade recommended for each nuance. For example, “Saebbalgda” (새빨갛다) could correspond to a bold red lipstick.

This experience allows consumers to learn the sensory nuances of language while simultaneously trying products, positioning the brand to connect K-Beauty with K-Culture and framing cultural experience as its distinctive value.
